Sega had a Humble Bundle recently with a bunch of Sonic games for their emulator. Having recently used it to play Golden Axe, a childhood favorite, I grabbed all the Sonic games.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog holds up surprisingly well! Sonic's speed is as impressively fast as I remember. The thing that caught my attention the most was how many different ways you could progress through the acts. It seemed like I was always bouncing up and seeing platforms moving above me. If I went down, there seemed to always be tunnels to roll through and springs to bounce off of to launch me every which way. There are secret passages everywhere with extra lives and rings and shields. It's no wonder I thought Sonic was so awesome in 1991. That must have been pretty ground-breaking (or I am unaware of similar games back then more like, ha).
So I made it through three worlds before I had enough. I kept dying on a really annoying Doctor Eggman battle where he drills downward to destroy blocks of the platform you're standing on. I just kept falling in the lava after attacking him and that was it. As a sidenote, I then tried Sonic 3d Blast, which was like running Sonic around Marble Madness mazes. It was sort of nauseating. You have to collect little birds (Doctor Eggman captured them and turned them into his robot army) and use them to open portals for you to go to the next area. I also played some of Sonic CD, which was more like original Sonic, but with some sort of time-traveling mechanic where you hit signs that say "future" or "past" and that changes part of the level, as if you are going forward or backward in time. Didn't play around with it long enough to figure out the details.
And there you go. Some good nostalgia!
