I'm still slowly working my way up the ranked league. I just hit 36. I had decided to quit when I reached 40 (taco league), but I am enjoying the game enough that I might keep on going...who knows. For now, the weekly new card has been a draw for me, partly because of the micro-goal, but also because the cards are often fun and slightly different.

It turns out this game has a pity timer (I'm thankful for)!
The other day I must have lost at least 5 matches (ranked) in a row...and then I was offered a free pack of cards! (woot!). It actually helped me feel less bad about 5-in-a-row losses... I also think there's a pity timer on the matchmaking, but I haven't really paid too much attention to that. I think that if you lose a bunch of matches, the matchmaking system will try to find you a much weaker opponent that (presumably) you'll have no trouble defeating.

I'm now in the Diamond league. There's only the Taco and Ultimate above that, so I'm pretty chuffed by that. At this point it's obviously getting slower to make progress and when I do, to be honest, it's partly due to the matching system that throws me an opponent that's much weaker (lower ranked). Of course, I've also been on the losing side of the matchup as well.
As for the game?
I've been enjoying trying out different decks and strategies and I think I have a much better understanding of what "good play" is for this game. There's also some cool subtle timing "tricks" I've picked up that I now roll my eyes at when my opponents don't do them. Curiously, though I often hate the randomness in the draw, I've enjoyed this game even though in some sense there's a bit more randomness. For example, every time an attack hits your opponent they randomly get 1-3 "shield" points. When the shield fills up the attack is ineffective and your opponent gets a special card they can keep or play instantly for free. I've lost games thanks to that and I've also won games thanks to that. They key thing is that you can plan for the shield to fill up - and act accordingly. For example, your opponent has a large enemy and your shield only has one empty space - you can not block that enemy knowing that its attack will trigger the shield and give you that free card.
I've also enjoyed the events - the only way to pick up some cards that are only available through the events (or purchasing them while the event is active). The events have forced me to play with certain characters (because they are awarded bonus tickets you use for purchasing the special character).
I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it to Taco league, but I'll try! Let's see for how long...

I've hit the point where I'm not sure I want to continue playing...but I just spent money on the game ($5). But, it all went to charity... but, I also didn't feel particularly happy with what I got for my money. Which, at this point, is my biggest issue with the game - they push the card/pack/currency spending pretty hard and it never feels like I'm getting a "fair" deal. I wouldn't mind paying, say $10 for the whole card collection (with maybe stuff you had to unlock through play), but I always feel like the game is trying to nickel and dime me. To be fair, I have the same issue with Hearthstone, so this isn't a knock on EA. Maybe I'm just not used to the "digital card" game business model?
