    lk356's Exploading Kittens (Other)

    [January 31, 2017 09:15:49 AM]
Exploding Kittens is a card based game revolving around drawing cards from the deck. The game is much like Russian Roulette, where the entire object of the game is to avoid dying, or in Exploding Kittens' case, not drawing an exploding kitten card.

    PLAYERS

Three to five players may play. Players may play cards to use their effects by placing them into the discard pile. The player must draw a card from the deck to end their turn, unless a card effect prevents such.

    THE DECK

The deck consists of the cards not in the players' hands, including the exploding kitten cards. There will be 1 fewer exploding kitten card then there are players. This guarantees a winner will be found. There are three possible interactions with the deck, shuffling, checking the top three cards, and drawing.

    CARD EFFECTS

The two most important cards in the game are the exploding kittens and the diffuse cards. Drawing an exploding kitten is the only way to lose the game, thus avoiding them is crucial to the game. The diffuse is the number one way to counteract the exploding kittens. When an exploding kitten is drawn, a player must play their diffuse card to stay in the game. Should a player do that, the exploding kitten is shuffled back into the deck. If the player cannot, the exploding kitten and the rest of the players cards are out of the game. In addition to these two, there are many other cards for a player to use. There are the skip, attack, nope, shuffle, and I can see into the future cards. Skip allows the player to end their turn without drawing. Attack does the same, but it also forces the next player to take two turns. Nope can cancel the effect of any card except a diffuse and an exploding kitten. The shuffle card allows just that, and the I can see into the future card allows the player to see the top three cards in the deck. In addition to these cards with definite effects, there are numerous generic cards which have various kitten related designs. These cards are alone useless, but with two of a kind, one can pick a random card from an opponent, and with three of a kind, one can name a card and if the player has it, they take it.

    GAME PLAY

At the beginning of the game, each player is given a defuse card and 4 other random cards. The exploding kittens are added to the deck and is reshuffled. A player's turn starts by playing any card from their hand, or no cards at all. The player's turn ends via a card effect, or more commonly, by drawing a card from the deck. The deck dwindles as turns pass. As a result, the chances of drawing an exploding kitten rises with each draw.

In my first game, I started the game. The first card I drew was an exploding kitten. Having lost my diffuse, I was forced to take chances and try to obtain another. Using the two of a kind, I managed to take one from an opponent and stay in the game longer then I otherwise would have. The game's mechanics allowed some form of fighting bad luck from the deck, but ultimately, it was not enough and I ended in third place out of four.

I did not experience as bad of luck in the second game as a fair number of turns passed before being forced to use a diffuse. In this game, I was also able to use cards such as I can see into the future, which I was unable to use in the previous game. Having used I can see into the future, it seems to be one of the most crucial cards that changes the game from completely blind drawing, into strategic challenge. This game went slightly better and I ended in second.

    OVERALL

While Exploding Kittens is mostly random, its cards give the player enough agency to fight that randomness as the odds grow ever against you. It is a good, quick game, that is easy to play and enjoyable for all.

The game, while mostly random, relying on drawing cards, allows enough interaction with the deck and other players to make the game enjoyable.
