Phase 10

Overview
#########################
The game is designed to be played by 2 – 6 players. While the game is still enjoyable with the minimum number of players. The difficulty level is lower and it take less time to progress through each phase.
The game begins by one player being picked as the dealer (basic dealer responsibilities apply) who then deals 10 cards to each player. These cards are dealt face down so the other players don’t see the color or value of the card. The next card in the deck is laid face up (this becomes the discard pile) and the remaining deck is placed next to the previously mentioned card.
The primary objective is to complete each phase and reach the tenth phase before anyone else. In the event of a tie, where two or more players reach and complete the tenth phase on the same turn/round, the player with the lowest score wins the game.

Note:
• Set: A group of cards with the same numerical value
• Run: A group of cards of nonrepeating cards in sequential order
• Color: The color of a card (Ex: Phase 8 => 7 red cards)

• Standard Card(s): These cards are marks with a numerical value and color
• Wild Card(s): These cards are marked with the word “wild” and the coloring/design will vary by deck of cards
• Skip Card(s): These cards are marked with the work “skip” and the coloring/design will vary by deck of cards

Special Card Rules

• Wild Cards:
These cards can be used as a replacement/substitute for cards missing from a player’s phase
The wild cards declared attribute (value and color) may not change after it’s been played
Multiple wild cards may be used to complete a player’s phase
Cannot be used as a skip card
• Skip Cards:
Players are not required to play this card immediately
Skips cannot be used for a phase and can never be drawn from the discard pile
The skip can apply to a certain player and this player may not be skipped twice
The first player will be skipped if the first discard pile is a skip

• Players may draw a card from either the discard or draw pile
• If possible, the player should lay down their completed phase
• Utilize other player’s phases which were laid down previously to empty their hand

Ending a Round

• The round continues until one player empties their hand
• The players which completed their phases progress while the rest repeat their current phase
• When the round is completed the players with cards remaining tally their points and add them to their overall score
• A new dealer is selected and then new cards are dealt to the players.

• Cards value 1 – 9 count 5 points a piece
• Cards value 10 – 12 count 10 points a piece
• Cards marked with “Skip” count 15 points a piece
• Cards marked with “Wild” count 25 points a piece

Analysis

Overall, Phase 10 is a simple game that can be a lot of fun. As stated above, though, with the minimum number of players this game can become lengthy on the more complex phases. In my opinion, it takes more to win Phase 10 than just completing your own phases. Ultimately, you want to make it harder for other players to complete their phases, and if they do phase use it to your advantage. While playing the game, you should monitor which phase your opponent(s) is on, which cards they discard, and which cards they pull from the discard pile. This information will allow you to make an educated guess at their strategy for completing the phase and with this information, you can start to derail their plans.
