    edGarcia's The Last Guardian (PS4)

    [September 21, 2017 06:01:57 PM]
I played through another few hours of the game and U have realized that I don't like this game. The game is beautiful and the way Trico interacts with the is environment is incredibly lifelike, but I was put off by the lack of story in the game.

I made it all the way to the part where the boy and Trico are climbing up a tower and a monster wearing a mask (who suspiciously looks like Trico) knocks us off.... for no reason. I'm sure the game later tells us who this is but I am a bit worn out of all of the puzzles and having no clues to the plot as a just wears me out. If I was to get a clue to the backstory after clearing each room I would be satisfied.

A big highlight of the game is when the bride you and the monster are on is collapsing, being in the open area was a great "breath of fresh air so to speak" after clearing the last dungeon. After rolling the glass off the game really picks up and the boy has to do a "leap of faith" to Trico's tail. The first time this happened I failed it because I thought I was dead but after seeing the tail come flying towards me, I knew that I had to press R1 to save myself. If the game had a few more of these fast paced moments, I would've gotten more engaged.

Overall I can see why people like this game, but it isn't my cup of tea. The visuals were great, puzzles challenging, but there wasn't enough to keep me engaged to the game. Looking back to my puzzle game history i really enjoyed portal 2 because after every couple of puzzles I would get backstory or witty robot humor to keep me entertained. The Last Guardian doesn't have this and so I wasn't as engaged. Having a narrator of the main character just describe what he is doing isn't plot development its boring.(at least to me it is.)

Day two of the last guardian. I started right after the first act after the trico eats me. The boy wakes up alongside the trico monster who is passed out as well. Without the trico monster available to me, I felt like my power of exploration had been severely limited. It took me a while, but (after looking at a guide) I finally figured out that I had to climb down the tail to keep progressing. Soon after I was being chased by some stone statues, I got caught by one and learned that there was a flailing mechanic in the game. By mashing buttons I escaped their grasp. I ran back to the trico and he woke up! He takes out the statues and starts freaking out. I can''t deny that I made a small connection to the trico after learning how to pet him.

I kept exploring and got higher on the tower. Kind of reminds me of the tower of babel from christian myth. Once we left some caves and made it into a small pond. The trico started playing in the water but he starts hissing and looking up. I looked up and saw a silhouette of another creature. The creature seems to be looking at us and then jumps away. After seeing this I finally have something to look forward to. I was starting to think that the whole game was going to be myself and the trico monster. This game kind of has me bored, without the lack of story and exposition there isn't anything to look forward to. With the encounter with the other monster I'm starting to be more interested in the game.

Just started the game, I have heard good things about this game but have never played it myself. I did like Shadow of Colossus which was made by the same dev team. Starting off it is a little bit slow, I don't know where I am/ who I am / or why I am here..... the Trico monster looks downright creepy to me. It just looks like a demonic creature. After some time I got used to his look and i think I am starting to warm up to him. Maybe because he is useful or I think its because there is no other characters in the game to bond with. I managed to get past the first act and the Trico ate me.... It took me forever to get to this area. Perhaps I have been spoiled by games that tell me exactly where to go and what to do. I have played games that are this slow before and I have been rewarded for being patient. So I have hope for the game.

Something that I have to talk about are the visuals. This game is really pretty and the effects of the wind and water look amazing. I also have a small love for the boy's call for Trico. It reminds me of Luigi's Mansion, where Luigi would keep calling out for Mario. I'd like to learn about the language he speaks. The theme of the game also looks like its South American.

At the beginning of playing i was frustrated with the controls and having to herd the trico where i needed it to be. after a while I got used to it. I am starting to look for nooks, ledges, and windows that I can explore. So far the game looks a little empty but I am willing to keep playing to uncover more of the plot
