While playing today my mission was to kill 2 people that are leading a revolt against the Moroccan government. The idea in killing them is that it will restore peace and make the country more stable. My big problem with this is that depending on who you ask, you may get different answers n whether the government needs to be overthrown. To most Americans, the American Revolution was absolutely necessary. So when I kill revolutionary leaders, am I helping to oppress the people they are fighting to free? And who am I to be making these decisions? For any governmental system, an national government that is not supported by it's people is not going to work. Eventually the people correct what is wrong should the opportunity present itself.

While playing today, my mission was to infiltrate a large mansion. Inside, I was to kill 2 targets and destroy a virus. I think most people would view weaponizing a virus as a bad thing, and thus it's destruction as a good thing. I also killed the 2 people most responsible for it being created. While playing, it is always a good idea to disguise yourself appropriately to get into certain areas. This aspect of the game raises a lot of moral questions for me though. One major opportunity to get in disguised as a cook presented itself to me and I took it. Doing so required me to break into his apartment and knock him out, then steal his uniform and security card. This was the man's first day on the job, one that I am sure he will lose after this incident. I did not kill him, but I did cause a serious problem in his life. There were many other people I ended up knocking out including guards, cleaning staff, scientists, and tourists. I think the biggest ethical question this level raised for me was do the ends really justify the means?

I began playing Hitman today. I like it quite a bit so far. I got past the tutorial sections and through the first 2 missions so far. I have been very happy with how much freedom of choice is given to the player in how they accomplish their goals. There are some major and obvious ethical issues in this game in which you play as an assassin. The game does not allow the player to choose not to kill the specific targets in the mission. But the game does allow the player to decide how many other casualties are necessary for completing the mission. Each time you subdue someone there is an option to kill them. You can hide people that were knocked out or killed, and this could reduce your need to kill again to cover your tracks. The main character himself I don't know too much about yet to make any ethical judgement of him aside from him being an assassin. I like that the game tends to punish the sloppy player who would go in and kill freely. This punishment takes the form of enemies flocking to you to kill you, making the game much harder than necessary. There is a general feeling given by the game that the fewer bodies you create, the less trouble you will have when playing.
