I've played this a few more times with a labmate and I've been surprised by how well I know this game. He hadn't played it before and it made me realize how important it is to know what each class can do, what the objectives are and the strategic layout of each map.
It seems so long ago that I was clueless...

I played an hour of this yesterday and it is still a great game. I don't know why it is that I can keep coming back to it since most of the usual attractors in an online-only game aren't part of my experience. For example, I'm not a memeber of a clan, I don't play with the same people (in fact, I never know anyone else when I play), I don't use cheats/bots/etc., etc.
I guess part of my enjoyable experience has to do with the fact that it is easy to get into a game, it takes time to get good at the game (learn the maps, etc.) and I like the setting.

I logged on yesterday during my lunchtime and found a server hosting a whole bunch of new maps I'd never seen before! Yay! I was starting to feel a little bit bored with the current selection. I hope these new maps spread around some and that I have enough time to learn them.

I thought I'd just mention that I'm still getting a kick out of this game. In particular there are some fun new maps out there. I like the Venice one, though the other day I saw a totally new one that took place in some Pacific island! All of us on the server had no idea what to do and it was over pretty soon, but I was definitely intrigued.

When picking a server to play on I usually look for two things. The first is a low-ping (from home, that means less than 50). The second is that it is not too crowded. Some maps are just too frustrating when there are too many people running around (with panzerfaust and mortars especially).
Well, a funny thing happened last night. I joined a server that had 2 other players and I was TOTALLY kicking butt. Big time. One of the other guys logged out and I kept on totally kicking butt against the remaining dude. Mainly he was always falling for my mines (I killed him at least 40 times). Well, for some odd reason we started chatting and I asked him if he knew how to play. He said not really so I offered to help him out.
This was totally different from anything I had ever experience before. I told him to pick a different class and explained all the basics. (covert op) We then moved to the next map and I kept up with the lessons. This was really cool! Here I was, speaking with the "enemy" and telling him what to do.. I wish someone had explained all that to me! In fact... I wish the game came with a sort of manual that explained the basics.. I had to learn by playing as well as a little help from gamefaqs. (to find out what the abilities did...the ones you get from experience points).
Now you know.. if you ever run into "Tajoman" or "Sitting Duck", I'd be willing to lend a hand!

Yes. I'm still playin this though I'm now getting a bit bored of the same old maps. I joined a server that had some new maps I had never tried before. It was interesting and fun... of course I had no idea what the heck the objectives where, the layout of the map, the spawn points, etc. I tend to choose a medic on these new maps. I then stick around with other players and try to make myself useful. It doesn't always work but at least the scenery is different. Right?

I played a few hours the other day as a Covert Op. It is amazing to me how much time you can spend playing a game without really understanding what is going on. In particular, I learned that Covert Ops can detonate buried mines by using a satchel charge. After you have detected a mine you can lay a satchel, detonate it and watch the mines disappear. This makes for really powerful teaming up. The Covert clears the path, and everyone else charges through! I'm surprised that I haven't seen this in use as much. In a sense it boils down to the whole team-play thing and how rare it is to see it when you're not part of a clan.

Sometimes, it is annoyng as hell to play on clan servers. Especially if you're playing against the clan itself. For starters, you always get your butt wiped. Really. (it's never fun if you always lose...right?) Of course there are a few reasons that come to mind for this happening. The first is that these clans are running "special" clients. They're harder to kill 'cause the have more hit points, have better aim, whatever. Another possibility is that they're more organized. I don't belong to a clan and it is pretty rare for me to join a game where there is consistent and organized teamplay. At times, I'm lucky...but more often than not it's about 12 guys running around doing their own thing. These clan guys? Well, they are ORGANIZED. Two guys covering each pathway, medics behind to heal and back them up. Maybe someone doing rearguard with a mortar or a MG..you name it. I must say that I've been impressed by some of these...while getting slaughtered. Am I good enough to join a clan? Not really, and I wouldn't want to either. I can't dedicate that much time to this game... though I wouldn't mind. :-)

Ahh.. You don't get xp for defusing your own mines (or those laid by your team). I still like this game a lot, but at times it is really hard to find a good server to play on. Some are too crowded (I don't like it when there are more than 8 players per team), on some there is too much use of heavy weapons (rockets, mortars), etc. It is really hard to find a game where you can play as a team. It does happen now and then, which totally makes up for the other "not so good" experiences..

I did a bit of "cheating" and checked out some gamefaqs to see what all the different experience levels get you (for the different classes). Wow. Some of them are really useful and they explain some stuff I'd seen happen in the game. For example, level 4 engineers take half damage from explosives and stuff like that...that explains some guys walking over two mines..and surviving. I also learned that you can actually defuse a mine. If you step on one, hear the hiss, and then look down you can defuse it! Cool! (you also get xp for that...dunno if you get xp for defusing your own mines..that would be kind of lame!)

Definitely improving... I played a full campaign last night and my team won every single time. (I even switched over from allies to axis a few times). It really makes a difference when you have good teammates. This game is all about support.

Now I wish this game had more maps. The ones that come with it are great, don't get me wrong. It just that a little more variety would be nice at this moment.

Ok. I've been playing some more. And some more. I really wish I knew what the different experience levels give you. In particular I wish I knew how the other (not medic or engineer) classes get their xp. I guess the covert ops guys would get it from stealing uniforms, but the other two? (soldier and field op).
I'm also having another gripe with this game. I don't know whether other players are REALLY good at shooting or what. Sometimes I'll die from 3 shots from an enemy soldier. (from full hell to zero in 3 hits) Whats up with that??? I've never been able to kill someone like that. In fact, it usually takes a heck a long time to down someone (unless they where already wounded of course)

I still play this, though sometimes it is really frustrating to join a game where everyone else can wipe the floor with your existence. :-)
I've been playing medics a bit more but it really depends on the map. Medics are awesome in those maps where players tend to move around in groups. (that way, you heal everyone). More "solo"-like maps aren't as good since medics have very little ammo.

Hehehe.. Now I know why people play Medics. You can heal yourself!!!

I've played this a bit in the lab (on Fridays) and some more at home. After the initial confusion as to the layout of the maps (and the general objectives, and how the classes worked) I have to say that I'm really enjoying this. Funny thing is, I'm generally not very good at shooter games, my aim is not precise enough. However, thanks to the classes different abilities I feel that I can make myself useful despite not being a crack shot.
For example, I've been playing as an engineer (hahaha) who can build, repair, and destroy things. There are a few missions when an engineers job is crucial. I walk around fixing gun emplacements, building command posts, etc.
