I played a bit more over the weekend, completing a few more quests until I got a moment where I was informed that monsters were going to attack the town! That's when I knew I was done - despite the different story, the game was following essentially the same structure and, I'm not THAT interested. So, I've been having fun, for sure, but not enough that I'm willling to play the (40?) hours left...
However, I did pop into the "open" "creative" mode the game also provides. There's some interesting features here - so, you're basically given a not-too-large square to build on (you can build anywhere, but stuff you build in the square you can share!) in a larger world that has spots where other people's creations can appear! There's these summoning stones and whatnot - but the cool thing is that it started to automatically populate my world with interesting/bizarre/fun creations made by other players! As you unlock chapters I think it also opens up portals to other areas so you can mine/collect the broader variety of ingredients. So, I quickly built something and decided to share it. Neat!

I finally finished the 1st chapter - and it was fun, even if the boss fight was challenging enough that I decided to "quit" and grind a little bit to make more special shields to help me in the battle. I also realized I had wasted too many bombs messing about such that I wasn't really going to be able to defeat the boss anyways...
I had sort-of decided that I'd finish the first chapter and then move on to something else. Then I decided I might as well play a bit of chapter 2 just to see what it's about. And now, I'm kind of intrigued enough that I've played a few hours. Sigh.
It's not that I'm not enjoying myself, it's just that it feels a bit..mindless? That being said the transition from chapter 1 to 2 was interesting. I was expecting more of the "same" - build a town, protect it from monsters, etc. I was not looking forward to starting from scratch (the game warns you that will be the case when you choose to enter this portal to go to chapter 2) but starting up again was surprisingly...smooth. Once you know what you're doing things move along a lot faster - I was even cooking and stuff!
This time around the "theme" is poison/disease. The whole land is sick and people are sick and I'm helping another character to heal them and bring back hope. You're still "the builder", but it's a different story and the environments look different and so, it feels fresh yet familiar. I don't really feel like I'm re-treading everything from before even as some of the old recipes are being used. There's more emphasis on new kinds of recipes (healing ones is what I'm working on), so I'm curious as to where this whole thing will go. I hope it's not as long as chapter 1 felt to play, but we'll see. I might just get bored mid-chapter and move on to something else.

I never played much Minecraft and this game is obviously inspired by it. The other day I was thinking that it's weird that there aren't more Minecraft clones given how incredibly succesful it was/is...and I'd forgotten completely about this game (and sequel!).
I've enjoyed all the handholding I've experienced so far - it really does help you know what to do and such - and there is plenty of leniency in terms of running off to do your own thing if you like. But, there isn't much point really because ultiamtely you want to unlock new recipes and that requires exploring and sort of following the quests and missions you receive.
I recall reading the review on Edge about how adorable the game was when it came to congratulating you - the NPCs run over and clap and give you all sorts of praise for building new rooms and things like that. It's super sweet...and yes I do have a soft stop for Dragon Quest so the familiar sounds (the level up trumpet fanfare is here!) are all welcome.
I'm a bit shocked at how the game looks like it's going to be - and I'm not sure I'm ready to invest all that time. Perhaps I'll just complete the first island or so? I think I'm already 4-5 hours in! I think that more importantly I'm not really all that excited about having to keep track of longer and longer chains of recipes and stuff?
