Agents of Mayhem has a lot of good. But is it enough good to overcome it's brother Saint Row's shadow? AoM has a of style and a lot to like, but unfortunately, there isn't really much that sticks out to make it a remarkable game. It's Volition's take on GI Joe, and overall they did a good enough job.
As I said the game has a lot of style. It's very colorful and nice too look at. It's got a lot a humor, but sometimes this comes off as forced rather than charming. The story is bare bones. The villains are nothing special. The gameplay itself is consistently good enough. I wanted to stop playing AoM, but the gameplay was what got me to the finish line. There are 12 playable characters in AoM and the player can take any three of them out at a time. The player then switches through them whenever they need to. Each character actually feels very unique. They all use different weapons and have different special attacks. Unfortunately, this mechanic feels kind of superficial as the game goes on. Once the player has all of the playable characters, they don't really experience anything new.
That brings me to the mission variety and ludonarrative harmony. All of the missions in this game are the exact same. Go to a spot, hack a thing, enter secret lair, and kill all bad guys. This is all done while voices are played in the background to provide story and context to what is going on. This didn't get insanely old, but it would've been nice to see more variety, and better story telling methods.
When I say Volition did a good enough job with this one I mean, everything in this game is good enough. There isn't anything that is bad about this game, but there isn't really anything that is great. During all of my time playing AoM I was thinking to myself that I wanted to play Saints Row again rather that AoM. That's probably not the best sign.
