Here I am at the beginning of May, writing about a game I realized I had beaten at the beginning of April, but turns out I had technically beaten toward the end of March. And that’s been more or less the extent of my gaming in the past two months. Work has been…on another level.
Celeste is a 2d platformer in the vein of Super Meat Boy. It’s hard as nails and requires some serious coordination with the controller. Even at the end of the game, I was regularly screwing up the directions of air dashes and the dash-grab button combo. It’s been a while since I played, and what I mainly remember in terms of the platforming is a lot of mid-air movement. I also remember ignoring the strawberries, which are optional challenge collectibles. It turns out that, if you want to complete extra levels, you need to go after collectibles. Finally, I remember that the levels tended to overstay their welcome, by the end taking me two hours to complete.
The character of Madeline, the other characters, and the story were great. I don’t know what I expected, but it was a game about mental health. Madeline is on a journey to climb Celeste mountain, where she has to overcome anxiety and self-doubt. This manifests as another character who torments her, until she learns to accept that part of herself, which ultimately makes her stronger. I found it charming, endearing, heartfelt. Madeline’s struggle against herself reflected my (and her) struggle against the mountain. Despite the difficulty and overly long levels, I think this is a gem.
