It's finished! I'm done! Finito.
Yes, I think it was worth it. In fact, once I finished it (the bosses are really easy...except for the King Bee one) I played on some more to see if I could get the percentage up a bit. (I did, though I can't remember to what number. I don't have the game with me at the moment)
In all, it is a good game and there is plenty of replayability if you want to get a good final completion rate.
On a final note, I was really amused by some of the interventions of a grandfatherly Kong (can't remember his name). Throughout the game you run into a little hut where he lives. He always has something nostalgic to say about games...in a very meta-game sort of way. For example, he'll start off with something like "Ah, in my day we only had 4 shades of gray! Aaahh..those where the days...not like now", and so on and so forth. Cool. Definitely cool.

I've been playing a lot less lately. Namely, I've been lucky and have been getting rides home most of the time. (thus, I don't get to play on the train back...).
My saved game is at 9:40 with 59% completion. I'm currently on the last world and have cleared 3 of its levels.
The last few levels have been interesting in the sense that they are hard, but not unfair. This has been a trend for a while now so I've been thinking that perhaps my initial appreciation of the game may have been a bit unfair.
I've finally got the hang of the controls and the difficulties I had at the beginning where due to the way the controls are worked out. Basically, you should never jump if you don't have the "run" key pressed. By default, "run" should be pressed all the time. This has saved me so many headaches... I guess I just can't comprehend why the designers would even bother with the "run" key since you basically need to have it pressed all the time. Oh well.

My saved game is at 7 hours, I've cleared the first level of the 5th world and I'm 43% done with the game.
Phew! I've spent the last couple of days stuck on two levels. Both were REALLY hard. I was able to pass the first one when, by mistake, I missed a jump and landed in a secret section that cannonballed me all the way to the end. Way cool! (but I wish I had found it earlier).
The next level was the same, I waltzed all the way through until I got stuck. I was stuck, stuck, stuck. Losing lives, not getting anywhere new, etc. All of a sudden I discovered a bunch of secrets. These helped me get to the place I kept dying at easier, though they didn't (unfortunately) help me pass the level. I was only able to clear it when, being extremely patient, I waited and waited and learned the pattern of moves (jumps and waits) I needed to pass. Phew. Did it!
I must say this game is starting to grow on me...is it because of the music? (its really fun music)

Saved game is at 4.5 hours and I've just started on world 4. (Ice world..)
Wow! It got HARD. Not unfair. At least not in the sense that the interface/control is letting me down. It just got really hard.
This game has a really nice feature that I'm very appreciative of. Within each level there is a barrel with stars on it. Hitting the barrel activates the level's checkpoint. The cool thing is that the checkpoint is essentially a savepoint since you always restart at it, regardless of whether you lost all your lives and are playing a continue or not. Smart design decision!

With over 3 hours on the saved game I've reached the end of the 3rd world.
I'm currently engaged in trying to defeat a giant yellow jacket (the boss). It's indicative of this game that this is the only boss I've had trouble defeating. A lot of trouble, actually. The first two bosses where pushovers. I nailed them on my first attempt, this third one...hmm... I've tried some 10 times at least?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not frustrated, annoyed or anything. It's just that this boss is significantly harder. I am getting better though, so I might nail him later on, but nonetheless...
DK Country is a game of uneven difficulty. Some levels are way easy, others are way hard..and there is no way to tell beforehand what you are up against.

My saved game is at 2 hours and I've finished World 2. As before, I'm still a bit annoyed by the controls though I have to confess that I am getting better. Perhaps I am playing a bit more cautiously (and defensively).
What I am most intrigued about at the moment is the fact that you can "tag-team" Diddy and Donkey so that they take turns being in the front. I'm not really sure why I would want to do this though it seems that Donkey can jump further?

I've finished the first "world" and I am probably halfway through the second. This game, as a platformer, is a real letdown after Yoshi's Island. Sad, but true. My main gripe at this point is regarding the controls. They just don't feel right.
For a platformer, where jumping is one of the most important actions, you would expect it least THIS to work right. It doesn't. I keep missing "easy" jumps because it is hard to tell when to jump and where you can land. I'm not sure if it is due to the graphics (3D renders) because I distinctly remember not having this problem in Crash Bandicoot GBA.
What is really infuriating is that this game does have a lot of potential. Some levels are genuinely fun (the one with the mine carts) and the mini-games are a really interesting bonus. But the main game? Not looking good I'm afraid.
