Summary:
Dead Rising is a game in which you are a photographer dropped into the midst of a zombie infested city. The game requires you to fight through endless swarms of zombies to rescue survivors and uncover a government conspiracy. The thing that sets it apart is that you may use nearly any item in the virtual mall from chain-saws to microwave burritos.
Gameplay:
My first thought when my character began talking was that he was much like Tommy Vercetti in GTA3. He is a seemingly tough but non-chalant character with only slight background history. Early in the game I was overwhelmed by cut scenes and plot development which I felt was a little excessive considering the simplicity of zombie narratives.
When I finally got into the mall and through the interruptions the game became instantly entertaining. I love the feel of freedom in games that I'm playing, so immediately I ran around trying every item to see which were stronger, gorier, faster, bloodier, etc. I took quickly to a couple items and found myself unable to pass up using a scythe to take the head off an innocent person. The gore is animated and slightly excessive which is really a draw.
The game was quite enjoyable and allowed you to take your time getting to plot points. The plot points would load as you entered certain areas, where you would then have to fight more difficult opponents.
